What is Brake Fluid?

Brake fluid is a hydraulic liquid that lubricates the brake pedal and keeps it moving freely. It also lubricates your braking system and helps to keep it from corroding. The brake fluid in most new Chevy vehicles is glycol-ether based, but some are silicone-based (DOT-5) or mineral oil-based (LHM). Review your owner’s manual to learn which type of brake fluid your specific model requires.

Steps For How to Check Brake Fluid

  1. Locate your car’s brake fluid reservoir on the master cylinder underneath your hood. You can also check your owner’s manual to find the exact location.
  2. On the outside of the brake fluid reservoir, you should see a “minimum” and “maximum” line. Check your brake fluid level against these lines. If the fluid level is closer to the minimum line, it’s time for brake fluid replacement or brake service with Smith Chevrolet Of Turlock.
  3. Observe the color of the brake fluid. You need to schedule a brake fluid flush if it appears dark brown or black (like motor oil).

Why Does Brake Fluid Need Changing?

There are several reasons that brake fluid needs changing:

  • Brake fluid attracts moisture which can cause your brakes to degrade more quickly.
  • When brake fluid ages, it becomes contaminated with little particles that may damage other brake-related systems.
  • Systems like ABS and traction control create heat when activated, shortening your brake fluid’s life.

What Color is Brake Fluid Normally?

What color is brake fluid? New brake fluid looks almost clear, with a slight yellowish tint. The color changes over time as you use your braking system on your Modesto drives. If it appears dark and oil-like, it has picked up dirt and debris, which can negatively impact the performance of your brakes if left unattended.

Brake Fluid Service Intervals

Are you wondering how often you should check your brake fluid? Check it during every oil change or at least once per year. Brake fluid should last about four to five years, but it varies depending on the type of vehicle, driving habits, and the driving conditions around Ceres. When you bring your vehicle in for routine scheduled maintenance at our Chevy-authorized dealerships, our service technicians will know when to check and replace your brake fluid.
